From: Rabbi Berman (through e-mail)
Every student everywhere, and every parent, to say the least, has been shaken by the news from Virginia Tech. We are reminded once again that life is fragile, and that in the eyes of some, life is largely meaningless and easily expendable.
In the face of that we respond in several ways. One, of course, no matter where we are, is to be careful. The prevalence of guns in our society presents a danger that can never be overlooked, and no matter where we are, we are wise to be alert and cautious of anyone and everyone nearby who might present a danger. Most of our schools and most of our neighborhoods are safe, but we can never take our safety for granted, anywhere.
Beyond that, it is because we believe in the preciousness of life, and the fact that it is a gift from God, that helps us to celebrate everything good and feel more hopeful about the future. The connections we make to people around us, the fact that we care for others and know that they care about us, make us stronger, not weaker in the face of violence and danger. Prayer, our own individual prayers and the prayers of our tradition, help to remind us that God’s presence is a source of strength as well, and an assurance that no matter where we are, we are never alone. In the face of unspeakable tragedy, we affirm the goodness of so many things in our lives, with so many reasons to look forward
I am always glad to talk, if I can be helpful in any way.
With warm good wishes,
Harold Berman
